Project aim

In July I'm going to New York to do an internship with Human Rights Watch!

About the project

Thanks for stopping by! As you might know, in July I am going to spend 4 months in New York to do an internship with Human Rights Watch in their disability rights team. I'm a qualified social worker and have over 10 years experience working with children and young people in 8 countries. I am also an active member UNICEF's Global Partnership on Children with Disabilities.

My dream is to advocate for an end to institutional care for children globally. Watch the video to find out why!

This is a really important issue to me as there is a very strong possibility that I would have been brought up in an institution had I been born in another part of the world. I really hope this doesn't sound cheesy, but I would love to see a world where all children (with and without disabilities) get to grow up in a loving family, with rights, access to quality health care and an inclusive education - like I did!

I am just about to finish a masters in International Development and am hopeful/quietly confident that this internship will give me the experince I need to finally get my foot in the door!

Unfortunately the internship is unpaid. I have worked out it will cost around £5730 for:

  • Flights - approx £550
  • Insurance - £400
  • Accomodation - approx £700 per month = £2800
  • Living expenses (travel and food) - £450 per month = £1800
  • Visa - £150

Usually I would always fund this sort of thing myself - but in September 2014 I was hit by a car and could't work for over 4 months (I am a freelance worker, so didn't get proper sick pay and wasn't eligible for any benefits). I have managed to raise £3500 through savings and really generous donations.... but any help raising the rest would be really grately appreciated!

Unfortunately I broke my pelvis in my accident, so I am not up to any sort of marathon, but from Monday 20th- Friday 24th April I will do the live below the poverty line challenge. This means I have to live on £1 per day for 5 days... which sadly means no diet coke!! Also, if I meet my target of £2000 I will spend a day roaming the streets of London dressed as Zippy from Rainbow!

Thanks so much for taking the time to read this, and if you are able to contribute a couple of quid, it would be a massive help! I will be doing it as cheap as possible, so any money I manage to save will be donated to Lumos - the organisation that made the video above.

Nancy :)
