We are Laughing Mirror, a theatre company based in Norwich. We specialise in comedic theatre that challenges audiences to reflect on, and ultimately laugh at, the more ridiculous aspects of humanity and society.
Our first production, 'Guy Fawkes It Up', a new farce about the gunpowder plot debuted at the Edinburgh Fringe 2017, where it went on a run of sell-out performances at the Space on North Bridge. As a result, we went on to produce multiple shows in our emerging comedic 'house style' throughout 2018, the first of which being 'WINGMAN' (a new play exploring Cupid's love life) that premiered at the Maddermarket Theatre in Norwich, selling out 4 of it's 5 performances. The next being the original version of Accalia's 'White Girls' at Otherplace: The Warren, Brighton Fringe 2018 - which received multiple 4-star reviews and full auditoriums! After 'White Girls' we rounded off a wonderful year for Laughing Mirror by taking two new comedies to the Edinburgh Fringe for simultaneous runs at the Space on North Bridge - 'Framed!' and 'Good Vibes Only'.Both plays received 4-star reviews from Everything Theatre and sold-out around 90% of their tickets across their two-week runs. Our most recent production, ‘Midsummer Herders’ (a who-dunnit showcasing Northern stereotypes) had already sold-out all 5 of its shows at the Maddermarket Theatre in our home city of Norwich, 2 weeks prior to it’s opening night.
We are once again looking to bring 2 shows to this year's Edinburgh Fringe and 1 to Brighton Fringe!
First of all, a new version of 'White Girls' will head to Edinburgh for a full-run at Gilded Balloon - "Two girls go on a journey. They want to annoy their Tory parents. They want to make a difference. But as they find themselves in the middle of an international refugee crisis, they realise they are going to need to do more than just a fun run to help. White Girls explores voluntourism within the Calais Jungle from 2016 to the present day and questions the notion of white charity. **** (BroadwayBaby.com). **** (VoiceMag.uk). Shortlisted for New Writing South's Best New Play at Brighton Fringe 2018."
Secondly, a new comedy called 'Seasoned Professionals' in our family-friendly house-style at the 120-seater Fleming Theatre at theSpace at Surgeon's Hall - "When government cuts hit the Department of Seasonal Mascots, Santa and friends panic! It soon becomes every man/woman/rabbit for themselves as they quickly sabotage each other’s festivals to keep their own jobs safe. You'd better watch out, the Claus are out and the halls aren't the only thing getting decked! Laughing Mirror return with a brand-new family farce, following three sell-out Edinburgh shows in two years – Guy Fawkes It Up, Framed! and Good Vibes Only. Previous Fringe praise: 'Could be the next new comedy to hit the West End' **** (Everything-Theatre.co.uk), **** (BroadwayBaby.com). "
And last but not least, another new adult farce in 'Defective Inspector' for the Brighton Fringe 2019 at The Warren - "Prepare for a hilarious hour of (awkward) romance, (sloppy) action and (tenuous) espionage! An eccentric ex-Detective, Richard P. Cooper, attempts to stage one of his "legendary" exploits to the USA, with help from two hapless drama students. The cast of 3 just about manage to perform their way through a ridiculous series of adventures, involving three-legged dogs and assassination plots, while tensions run high between them and the show falls apart quicker than Richard’s failed novelist career."
So that's the plays we intend to bring to the Fringes! But, why do we need your help?
Getting to the Brighton/Edinburgh Fringe can be a costly experience, with just one show! Things such as venue hire and Fringe registration soon add up for each play, and we are taking three...
If we raise an initial £1250 on CrowdFunder, it would contribute significantly to our venue hire and help us expand our marketing budgets massively! We will be exceptionally grateful to every person who supports our project! Ultimately through giving on here, you are supporting the future careers of all 20 people involved in the projects, and helping to raise the profiles of a bunch of exciting young actors, directors, producers and writers. Please support us if you can - we would really appreciate it!
