GRAPPENHALL EX-SERVICEMEN’S BOWLING SECTION “COVID” CAMPAIGN

The background to our appeal.
Coronavirus has had a big impact on GESM Crown Green Bowling Section.
Due to the virus all bowling activities at the Club were suspended this year which resulted in a loss of weekly revenue on match days from playing fees, raffles and the cancelled presentation race night.
The Covid restrictions within the hospitality section has also meant that the Ex-Servicemen’s Club itself has been unable to make its usual payments for the maintenance of the green this year, nor will it for the foreseeable future.
Although the green has been closed it still has had to be maintained. We have used our bowling section funds to pay for basic maintenance and some of our members have voluntarily tried their best to maintain the green, but the bowling green is deteriorating without the involvement of a professional green keeper. This setback has significantly reducing our finances.
Our aim is to:
1. raise funds for the club to enable us to pay for the vital maintenance of the green so that it will be fit for use next season and in future years.
2) encourage more people to come and enjoy the game of bowls with us.
How can you help us??
You can help us in two ways...
1) please give a donation on this page
2) come along and give it a go!

WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU?
BOWLS IS ONE OF THE MOST INCLUSIVE SPORTS AVAILABLE.
IT IS A SPORT WITH OUTSTANDING HEALTH AND SKILLS BENEFITS, WHICH INCLUDE:
MOTOR SKILLS PHYSICAL SKILLS
PSYCHOLOGICAL SKILLS SELF ASSURANCE
SOCIAL SKILLS
If Liverpool Manager, Jurgen Klopp, enjoys the game, well, it must be good!

PLEASE HELP US TO RETURN TO BOWLING
We are looking to raise £5,000 from our members, supporters, the local community and Sport England, which will enable us to maintain our bowling green during the forthcoming year.
COVID 19 has affected the Club and in turn all our members and supporters in some way. The sport, fun, fitness and social side is being missed by all associated with the Club.
WE, THEREFORE, ASK YOU TO PLEASE GIVE GENEROUSLY TO MAINTAIN A BOWLING CLUB FOR OUR COMMUNITY.
WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO

The Grappenhall Ex-Servicemen’s club (GESM) was established in 1921 and has been a vital social hub for the community of Grappenhall and surrounding areas.
Whilst incorporated in the main club the Bowling Section operates with its own committee, membership and finances.
We run the following groups:
- Seniors Section (over 60 years)
- Monday and Friday teams
- Ladies section
- Sunday evening mixed pairs
- Thursday afternoon social competitions
For those who want to play competitive bowls we have teams in the Warrington Men’s and Ladies Leagues.
All members of these organized activities have to subscribe additional fees to play, however, those members of the community wishing to have non-competitive bowling merely have to be a member of the GESM Club.

COMMUNITY
Many of the members of the Bowling section are retired and for some of these members the club is a major part of their social life. The club is a means to meet other people, participate in outdoor physical exercise, meet other bowling clubs and enjoy wider social activities. We also have younger members within the teams and we are keen to engage individuals, either experienced or new, to bowling to ensure we have a membership base to guarantee the bowling club’s future. The green is there for the benefit of all the community and we would welcome people coming along to give bowling a try and maybe find they have a new hobby.
FACILITIES

The bowling green is the only facility of its kind within the villages of Grappenhall and Thelwall and offers the whole community the ability to play a sport many enjoy. GESM has been proud to support the activities of the local community in providing access to the club facilities for charity raising purposes, and the Bowling section donate annually from their Presentation Evening revenue to local charities.
In previous years this has included:
- St Rocco’s Hospice
- Red Cross at Warrington hospital
- The Stroke Society
- The Children’s Adventure Farm Trust

NOW WE REALLY DO NEED YOUR SUPPORT.
PLEASE HELP US TO REACH OUR GOAL
OUR GOAL
MAINTENANCE OF THE BOWLING GREEN
If the bowling green is not maintained, we fear the future cost of restoring the green will be too excessive for our funds.
If the bowls section closes, our members will lose this valuable social and exercise facility.
We have now entered into a contract to maintain the green with a Professional Green keeper from 1st January 2021 and also execute remedial measures due to reduced maintenance during 2020.
We are therefore aiming to achieve what we would have achieved, if the Pandemic had not occurred.
We need to raise £3,500 and then Sport England will give us £1,500 to enable us to reach our target of £5,000. This will be a grant of 30% of our target.
PLEASE HELP US TO REACH THIS TARGET SO THAT WE CAN MAINTAIN THE GREEN FOR FUTURE USE
BY DONATING TODAY.
