The Garw Valley Railway manage the Community Path and wish to improve the environment for Users by making the over-river bridge decking safer. We receive no Council funding at all and are dependent upon Volunteer efforts and donations. Because the bridge does not count as railway infrastructure, we cannot spend railway charitable funds upon it.
The railway team want to ensure the future of the path as it is a significant valley asset and heavily used by the community and visitors. The current condition gives concerns for cyclists and the less able-bodied persons because the decking is uneven; the non-slip netting is corroded and lifting in parts. Recent increased usage due to lockdown has increased the wear and tear inevitably.
Use of environmentally friendly, and recycled, material to replace the decking will enhance the condition and offer a much longer life and safer experience, as it will not be affected by the damp conditions prevailing. The proposal is to use materials similar to those used in wetland areas by the Nature Conservancy - that is recycled plastic planking that is non-slip, and easily secured to the existing base framing.
