To complete funding for our badly needed community clubhouse.

by Lesley Paris in Great Bowden, England, United Kingdom

We are a great friendly community tennis club run by volunteers who are trying to better ourselves. We are not an exclusive wealthy club with lots of funds.

Since we managed to purchase our lease from the local district council in 2016, we have been working to improve our facilities, yet we desperately need a new clubhouse to replace our 50 year old `quaint` wooden clubhouse which was originally two wooden sheds joined together. It is now in a state of disrepair which means that any money spent on it is a waste. It is very basic and not fit for purpose in this day and age for a sporting and community facility.

We are situated in a village less than a mile from the expanding town centre and our new clubhouse will be a benefit to the whole community, not just the tennis players, as it will be available for hire.

As an inclusive centre of the community we offer coaching sessions for both adults and juniors with a focus on specific sessions for those with learning disabilities. Local volunteers support the club coach in delivering these sessions which are hugely popular with the participants. (See more at

More recently we supported Breakpoint 2019, a tennis tour which has raised awareness of the positive effects of physical exercise in a social environment on mental health. We have set up a group to meet weekly to allow those with such concerns to come along weekly for some exercise, fun and a chat.

So far we have raised enough funding to be able to demolish our existing clubhouse and build the shell of the new one. We are so close to being finished, but need the funds to equip the inside of our building, to fit out the kitchen, changing facilities, toilets and showers and most importantly make the whole place far more accessible to our disabled users. Their presence at the club has made its limitations all the more obvious.

We have applied for grants to many, many organisations but still have a shortfall. Sadly we do not play a sport where the National Governing body see fit to give us grants - we can get a loan, but as a small club there is a limit to what we can borrow.

We really need help to get us over the line, so please donate and share widely to help support our cause and most importantly the community.
