In just over 2 months the West Midlands will elect its first ever Mayor of the new Combined Authority.
Green Party candidate James Burn is campaigning to make sure the Combined Authority stops making decisions driven by big business, behind closed doors, and without any reference to the need to live within our environmental means - and instead starts being truly democratic and accountable, and working to make life better for everyone (particularly the most vulnerable), in a sustainable way.
We've had a great campaign so far, with James getting more Green Party media coverage in the West Midlands than all previous Green Party campaigns put together.
As one commentator wrote:
"James is exceptionally open, tolerant, and progressive. He is also exceptionally normal...James is the antithesis of the elite, and stands against their domination of politics with his emphasis on localism and transparency...his policies are being listened to.
He was the first candidate to stand up for the living wage. This was immediately echoed by the Lib Dems and Labour...Whether anybody likes it or not, James is changing the game".
The media and other candidates have paid attention to our campaign and we've already seen unions gain representation on the Board of the new super-council (a key campaign aim) and serious discussion about how the new authority can tackle poverty and the energy crisis.
So, we're making an impact but we need your help to get our message to every voter in the West Midlands and to apply even more pressure.
Unlike the other parties the Green Party doesn't have big donors, so we have to rely entirely on members and supporters.
For example, a booklet will be sent out to all 2 million voters in the West Midlands. But printing it doesn't come free. We also need to pay for leaflets, manifesto printing, travel, venue hire and much more.
We are aiming to raise £5,000 to enable us to carry out an ambitious and effective campaign.
Every donation will help us get our message, about a fair and sustainable West Midlands that takes special care of the most vulnerable, to more people and grow Green Party support across the West Midlands. Please chip in what you can today and help James's campaign have an even bigger impact.
