We wish to replace old diesel cars with new efficient Hybrid car, reducing our carbon footprint and providing an efficient service.

by David Hook in Dumfries, Scotland, United Kingdom

Dumfries and Galloway Blood Bikes run entirely by Volunteers, none of whom receive any payment for their time. The service is provided free of charge to the NHS for the benefit of the patients.

We receive no government funding and operate entirely on charitable donations from the Public, Businesses and Grants.

As a group we transport urgent Blood Samples, Medical equipment, Medical Notes, Medication and Blood. The primary work is completed using motorcycles as it provides the most efficient method of transporting the items. We travel UK wide, linking in with other Blood Bike Groups when possible.

We are the only group in Scotland that provide a 24/7 service and one of only a few UK wide, we always have a minimum of 2 riders/drivers on call and a full time controller always manning the phone from home.

The Chief Executive of D&G NHS describes our service as invaluable and that the impact is widespread across the whole region, financial savings are able to be used to support vital clinics and services.

On average we respond to over 100 calls per month from the NHS for our patients, covering well over 15000 miles per month.

Cars provide a vital backup in adverse weather and for the transportation of Blood for transfusion. We provide a weekly service transporting Blood to outlying Hospitals in our region, ensuring that vital Blood supplies are used within their lifespan and none goes to waste.

We operate 9 bikes and 6 cars, last year our cars covered over 75000 miles, the cars are made up of an old Volvo Paramedic car, a Hyundai i40 ex police liveried car that was featured in a James Bond Movie and 4 Skoda Octavia diesel 4x4 cars.

We are wanting to change our old Skoda diesel cars to more efficient and environmentally friendly Hybrid cars that are 4x4 capable, this will help us to reduce our Carbon footprint and will provide economy and reliability.

The service we provide is proven to save lives and has a significant impact on the treatment patients get and the positive impact on the families of patients with life changing illness's and injuries.
