“Dancers, let’s take it from the top"
About the Work
Where there is people, there is politics. What exactly are the roles of dancers and choreographers in the choreographic process? How do the hidden power relations manifest themselves between what is being said and what is being done? Just how far can people get away with things in the name of art?
From the Top is a witty dance work that explores the power relations between performers and dance makers. The piece presents to the audience a fictional scenario based on the everyday life of dance artists and looks at the absurd nature of so-called artistic integrity and what it means to make art. Action on stage is juxtaposed with voiceovers and surtitles to reveal the politics between the ever-demanding choreographer and dancers who continuously attempt to fulfil a choreographer's artistic vision.
Since its premiere in 2015, From the Top has been presented across four continents with critical and popular acclaim including in Hong Kong, South Korea, New Zealand, United States and Germany. Our performances at Edinburgh Festival Fringe (EdFringe) will mark the first time the acclaimed work is presented in full to audiences in the UK.
Victor Fung Dance has been invited by Dance Base, a National Centre for Dance in Scotland, for an extensive 21-performance run as part of the EdFringe season from August 2-25, 2019.
We Need Your Help
As you can imagine, there are considerable costs for this exciting opportunity including transportation, accommodation, food (yes, dancers have to eat too). We've been fortunate in receiving some support for the project, yet we are still in need of extra funds to cover the costs of insurance, flight tickets and publicity during EdFringe as detailed below:
- Marketing Expenses ........................... £800
- Insurance (for 6 pax)............................ £800
- International flights (for 6 pax)........... £6400
We offer different reward packages for our funders, including specially designed souvenirs for the production:
With your support in our campaign, we will take this project and Victor Fung Dance to new heights and continue to push the boundaries of what dance can be.
