North Ayrshire Foodbank was approached to assist a community through the provision of pre-cooked meals. To do so we approached three grant agencies to renovate the kitchen (electrical upgrade and renew floors and walls with hygienic materials you would find in a commercial kitchen), buy commercial ovens and a portacabin for enhanced storage facilities of ingredients.
Two funding agencies awarded the funds which gave us 85% of the required monies with one more grant to be finalised. The foodbank will be working with the community on the creation of a menu and the skilling of community members to make the meals under the supervision of a training chef. The meals will be offered through a supported programme where recipients will be encouraged to engage with professionals to deal with the underlying cause for the need of support.
As the foodbank has a two year stock of pasta and will receive vegetables via its membership of the Trussell trust Asda programme the one item we cannot access in sufficient quantity is meat, chicken or fish.
Once a week beneficiaries will be able to take, on the basis of paying what they can, three meals. One will be pasta based, another rice and the third meat. All will be accompanied by potatoes and vegetable packs.
The costs of the meat is priced at £11,500 per annum. The Foodbank is looking for donors to assist in securing funds for the first year to buy the meat. This is being secured at “cost” via a supportive local food retailer. The rate being £4.50 per kilo with a requirement for 2,500 kilos. If funding is secured that would give the Foodbank time to seek to create a regular giving group of 100 donors donating £2 per week (which with gift aid would meet the annual cost).
