WHAT IS FOODHALL?
Foodhall is a community centre/cafe/venue/workshop/utopia in Sheffield city centre. Our aim is to bring everyone together, to share, as equals. We do this by serving food (because everyone needs to eat) made from surplus ingredients on a contribute-what-you-can basis. This means that everyone can access a hot meal, company, and community, and in turn everyone can give something back, whether that's money, materials, time, skills, conversation. We create space to build communal relationships across societal divides, making a platform for mutual aid and tackling social isolation, inequality, food insecurity, and food waste.
Alongside our community cafe, we also provide platforms for community members to pursue their own interests and run their own projects. From this, we run film nights, guitar lessons, bike repair classes, a pottery studio, carpentry workshop, garden, radio, and more.
For the fourth year running Foodhall opens its doors on Christmas day for Public Xmas! We'll be open 10-5 for food, fun and frolics. There’ll be games, music, tea on tap, and enough food to keep you full ‘til Easter. Public Xmas is open to all. It’s Christmas day for people who want to spend Christmas day at Foodhall. If you, or anyone you know, is looking for something to do, somewhere to be, and someone to be with on xmas day, please feel welcome to join us.
WHAT DO WE NEED?
We've had an amazing year at Foodhall. We've served thousands of meals, hosted hundred of events, put on dozens of workshops, spread the movement for a National Food Service, and even curated a few exhibitions. It's been a great 12 months, and we can't wait to see what 2020 brings.
We rely massively on the contributions of our community, and wider supporters, to run. We have an incredible team of volunteers who help to run our kitchen, front of house, organize events and workshops, manage the project, and more. We're lucky enough to receive regular donations of food and coffee from some wonderful local traders to keep our cafe stocked and everyone fed. However, we still need to fundraise to cover ongoing costs such as rent and utilities, and purchasing and repairing equipment. In particular this year we need funds to:
- repair or replace our oven (or christmas is cancelled!)
- buy a toaster (breakfast has been on hold for a few months)
- replace the rinse sink in the kitchen, and other kitchen kit
- get some heaters!
- stock up on oat milk
- cover ongoing operational costs (e.g. rent & bills)
Please give what you can this xmas if you fancy helping us out. Any donation will be hugely appreciated, and go far in helping us carry on our work to bring everyone together. If you think you can help us out with a specific item listed above, get in touch. If you'd like to support us but don't have the funds, don't worry - let us know and we'll work out other ways you can contribute :)
