To meet the urgent demand on Hackney Foodbank in 2021 by providing parcels of food to people in our community experiencing food poverty.

by Hackney Foodbank in London, England, United Kingdom

We here at Hackney Foodbank want to make sure that no one in our local community has to go hungry and seek funding to make this a possibility.

Demand on Hackney Foodbank has increased from 8,106 people given help in 2019 to nearly 20,000 in 2020; this represented nearly 10% of all parcels given out by Trussell Trust foodbanks in the greater London area for that year. We expect that this trend will continue to increase dramatically in 2021 with the ongoing pressure from the COVID19 crisis and the uncertainty and risk of unemployment once current support measures are withdrawn. In addition to supporting vulnerable Hackney residents, we are currently helping people impacted by food poverty in our neighbouring boroughs, including Tower Hamlets, Islington, Haringey, Waltham Forest, Newham, and the City of London. We need your help to continue our outreach work to community members in East London.

Given these challenges, the fact that we have continued to provide a dignified and efficient path out of hunger and food poverty is a great achievement.

Due to the restrictions imposed by the COVID19 crisis Hackney Foodbank has had to cancel many of our outreach programmes that involved meeting in-person with community members. However, following guidance from the Trussell Trust, we have worked very hard to develop robust signposting and non-food support systems for users of our foodbank, including (but not limited to) information on:

  • How to access free hot meals for people who are homeless;
  • In-centre advice on debt consolidation and relief, management of bills, and on other financial matters;
  • Local resources in Hackney for supporting migrants and others with no recourse to public funds;
  • Nutrition for families and children and access to additional resources for this demographic;
  • Local resources for people suffering from mental health or addiction issues; and
  • Local resources for victims of domestic abuse.

We share in the Trussell Trust’s commitment to:

Compassion: We stand in solidarity with people that need the help of food banks. We put the well-being of people served by food banks above everything else. We always uphold and protect their dignity.

Justice: We are motivated by a desire to see a more just society. It’s not right that anyone is facing hunger and poverty. Everyone should have enough income to afford the essentials.
