Flexible funding – this project and will receive all pledges made by June 17th 2019 at 10:48am

We desperately need to renovate the recreation space within our rural primary school that caters for our village 3-11 year olds.

by Friends of Mary Howard in Edingale, England, United Kingdom

Our project

Our playground area is a great space shared by just over 50 children ages 4 - 11, but due to the lack of funding is now tired and drab with areas that are sadly no longer child friendly. The creation of a play and educational hub is set to start seeing the change. This exciting area where a library can function and kids can draw and play games with the inclusion of picnic tables that have a dual purpose to play games and read at, with the opportunity to take lunchtimes outdoors! The renovation of an existing pergola into a fully functioning outdoor classroom with the addition of a new solid roof, whiteboards, seating and tables, allowing the school to take lessons and assemblies outside even when it’s raining! As we lack space to house a school hall this area will be hugely beneficial.

How will our project benefit our local community?
Our school maybe small but the children at it are the heart of the village and our future and by creating a better learning environment for them; building self confidence, developing a respectful connection to the environment, and the added engagement of the children are all but a few of the added benefits being outside brings and all this can but improve the community as a whole. We are a small happy rural village of mixed social economies and have a great all year events calendar inclusive of our fundraising events. The village came 2nd in the 2018 best kept village competition and the school are very much involved in the 2019 competition, creating posters and writing poetry. Projects aimed to improve our school sends a ripple effect through our village and everyone is rewarded.

The support we have from our local community

There are 3 main committees that help represent the Edingale village people; village hall, the Parish and us the PTA. All that we do is shared with one another and if we can help each other out and link together then the better the result; we sought permission from the Parish before organising our Scarecrow festival, the village hall have agreed to cut costs and share a new electric griddle and offers to help and support each other are always free flowing.

How many people will benefit from our project?

Mary Howard primary school will primarily benefit from this project, we are a small rural school made up of 3 classes with just over 50 children from ages 4 - 11 from a mixed social economic background.

How we intend to spend the money.
The project will entail the following: The purchase of a prefab permanent educational wooden building plus fit out at £4800, levelling and resurfacing grounds at £2800, storage huts at £1100, roofing and internal fit out of the existing pergola into an outdoor classroom at £550, picnic benches at £500 and planting area at £200. The total estimated cost for this project is £9550. If we were successful in our bid to secure £5000 funding from the Calor Community Fund, the excess of £4950 will be raised through a variety of organised fundraising events, with £1200 already raised this academic year. Through the introduction of our society lottery we hope to raise much more, not to mention the big event of the year, our 1st Scarecrow Festival!

When and why was our project founded?
Every year the PTA hold discussions with the head of the school to discuss how the funds raised could be best spent. This year we spoke about improving the playground activities and develop something that could also help gain more space in a small school building.
