In 2017 my company, Off the Map Dance created our first full length dance show Folklore that is inspired by past folk stories across the South West. We used these stories, used dance, puppetry and original folk music to form a new narrative. The collaboration between choreographer, Steve Johnstone; musicians, Ninebarrow and designer Lizzie Hingley all played crucial roles in putting this South West based show together.
Now the show exists our aim and vision is to take this exciting production across the UK to small community halls and art centres performing to rural audiences. Not only that but there are creative workshops on offer for these communities to engage in. These session will give insight to how the company works but also gives a taster to what the show is about. When we previewed Folklore, curtain raisers were created by youth companies that was an extension of these workshops. This brings extra performance excitement, more audiences and another opportunity for participants to engage with dance.
The money will directly cover the costs of the educational opportunities for local communities and the expenses for the performers to and from venues.
