For now we seem to have lost the battle to keep Hastings Pier in community ownership. After £14M of public, lottery and community investment, it was sold to a private individual for pittance at 9.00pm on Friday 15th June.
We want to work on three things:
- Engage with the new owner, local politicians, potential investors, and other partners to explore options for community influence on the future of the pier.
- Have a reserve fund so that, if the opportunity arises, we can aim to buy or otherwise re-acquire the community ownership of the freehold.
- To maintain our campaign and continue awareness-raising. This includes scrutinising and learning from the process that led to this outcome and to explore our options for a better outcome for Hastings Pier. We hope that lessons learned will help to ensure other community assets elsewhere are better protected.
To do all this, we need your help...
Donate to our campaign, your money helps us to engage experts, fundraise, raise awareness, and build up our reserve fund.
Spread the word, tell your friends and relatives about us, share on social media. There is strength in numbers.
Get involved, we always need active volunteers.
The principles behind the campaign were and remain:
People get a say in what happens next.
The community’s asset should not be sold off into private hands.
A partnership approach to ownership and operation is the way forward.
Good results are underpinned by good governance.
The Pier should remain a space that everyone can enjoy and take pride in.
