Our charity began in 2013 due to the cuts in Legal Aid funding. We recognised that people experiencing domestic abuse were unable to get legal advice about their situation. We began with a couple of qualified lawyers who gave us their time for free and we started to see clients at our premises in West Berkshire. We quickly grew and due to demand and client preference we now hold multiple 1 to 1 clinics each week via telephone.
Our service is available to anyone who is experiencing domestic abuse and/or violence. We do not means test, so everyone, regardless of financial situation has access to the same high quality legal advice.
Our lawyers provide legal advice on matters such as separation, child contact, divorce, finance and other issues that concern people when they are making life changing decisions about their future when they are dealing with domestic abuse.
In the past couple of years and thanks to some funding from our local Police Crime Commissioner, we have expanded our service to the whole of the Thames Valley, which includes: Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire.
Since the start of COVID19 Lockdown our referral rates have doubled and continue to climb so our service is even more in demand. We anticipate the need for an extra member of staff to help us manage our referrals, recruit more lawyers and take us to the next level.
Due to the high profile that domestic abuse has been given by the press and Government this year, we expect that our service will be in demand long after COVID19 poses a risk. So we are seeking to futureproof our organisation by raising funds to cover us for the next 2 years.
