My aim is to get my fun & educational children's book about freshwater fish beautifully illustrated so that it can be published this year.

by Lauren Vickers in Nottingham, England, United Kingdom

My name is Lauren and I am an aquatic ecologist. I have worked with freshwater fish for the last 10 years and I am inspired by the aquatic environment. I am all for finding Nemo, The Little Mermaid etc., but I feel that the freshwater world is ignored. I bet if you asked a child to name a fish that lived in a lake or river near you they would most likely say shark or dolphin. The humble roach, pike, stickleback and gudgeon are largely ignored by the younger generation unless you have an angler in the family or a freshwater scientist like me.

My dream is to have a range of fun and educational freshwater fish books based around a character called Fin (who is a grayling at present). They will be based within a freshwater river setting, all with a different story or educational lesson (not necessarily about fish). My first book is about footprints and learning to identify different animal footprints, which Fin comes across as he is swimming along in Lilypad Beck. He then realises that he doesn't have any footprints and goes to speak to his mum and dad about this. It is a happy ending, but you will have to wait and see what happens when the book is published (fingers crossed).

I have my first manuscript ready to go and have a number of quotes from illustrators. Given that my idea is based on great pictures and illustrations of the freshwater world and animal footprints, prices are quite high and as this is my first book, I don't want to cut corners. Therefore, instead of giving up on my dream, I thought I would try crowd funding. The money will be spent on an illustrator and bringing my vision to life so that it can be sent for publishing.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and for any donations received I will be forever grateful.

Best wishes,

Lauren
