1540250551_Finding%20Space%201.jpg[Finding Space] is a new project by Wigan Cosmos Football Club and has been designed to use sport as therapy and is aimed at participants who suffer from mental health illness or for anyone who would like to improve their mental well-being, mental and physical health, friends, carers and support workers are also welcome...

We aim to provide friendly football, sports coaching and matches led by an FA qualified and multi sports coaches with the main focus being on FUN and enjoyment! It doesn’t matter if participants have a good right foot or two left feet, all abilities will be welcome...

Good mental health is fundamental to thriving in life. It is the essence of who we are and how we experience the world. Yet, compared to physical health, so little is commonly known about mental ill health and how to prevent it.

That must change…

We aim to tackle mental health and use sport as therapy to reduce stress, develop coping strategies, develop resilience, enable and empower our participants by using the power of sport to tackle stress, this can go a long way to tackling mental health problems such as anxiety, depression and in some instances, self-harm, drugs and suicide. We have looked at a number of ways of how we could tackle stress and help improve the mental health, physical health and well being of our participants...

Poor mental health is not only affecting individuals, it is tearing families apart, causing more upset and distress for families as a whole, up and down the country, with individuals affected from all walks of life for various reasons. Anyone can be affected by mental illness and most people will not only identify with those that are but will know people who have been affected but how many people more have been affected with many people suffering in silence until it’s too late. In Wigan we have a high number of people who are affected by not only mental health issues but attempted suicide and committed suicide. Figures of suicide and attempted suicide among young people are continuing to rise, with young lives and bright futures destroyed. This has to stop, we can no longer sit idly by when our players, our friends, our families, our loved ones and our local communities are being affected so severely, with each life being lost, we feel we need to act and that we need to act now, if we can save just one, two or three lives then we have made a difference, we have helped in some small way, life is a precious gift and we need to make people understand this and just how loved, appreciated and valued they are by all…

We aim to offer football, multi-sports and circuit training for the first hour of the session and then tea, coffee, biscuits and a chat for the second hour, we plan to have occasional guest speakers along with a number of coaches, volunteers, councillors and mental health professionals attending the sessions in order for them to offer their help, expertise and support…

We would like to offer more than just sport and a chat, we need to help, support and educate not only our young people but also adults, the elderly (via our Walking Football sessions that we run) and their families via sports, forums and workshops but also other sports clubs, local schools and communities, we aim to run workshops for schools and colleges, produce leaflets and a support network for young people, adults, carers, support workers, friends and families to drop into…

We also plan to run an inclusive, all in “Jumpers For Goalposts” football drop in session to run alongside the [Finding Space] initiative which will allow young people and adults to just turn up and play football in an organised set up, overseen by coaches but fundamentally it will be just a turn up and play football session, as we used to all do when we were kids…

However In order to do all of this we need your support, in order to hire a sports facility for the first hour with an adjoining function room for the second hour along with covering the wages of the FA coaches, councillors, support workers and costs of the guest speakers along with buying additional football and multi sports equipment, refreshments, along with booklets and materials to support each and every participant and workshop. We would also need funding to appoint our clubs own councillor and run the additional “Jumpers for Goalposts” sessions and drop in centres…

Funding would allow this project to not only happen but also allow it to thrive, develop and evolve as the money would really be able to go a long way.  We would like all our participants to get fit both physically and mentally, socialise and improve their mental well-being all within a strong and healthy support network but more importantly, so please, please, please support us, this project isn’t simply about changing lives it’s about saving and enhancing lives and with your support we can really make this happen and make a real difference in the lives of so many…
