Bridge the gap in our community and give deprived children a greater chance to succeed in their futures

by Find the fun in reading in Reading, England, United Kingdom

Our vision is that every child a reader, with the self confidence and skills to make positive life choices and contribute to the wider community.

Assisting Berkshire Children to read, ABC to read, was set up and registered with the Charity Commission in 2004. Our mission is to recruit, train and support community volunteers to provide 1:1 mentoring of primary school children (ages 5 to 11), throughout Berkshire and part of Buckinghamshire, who are struggling with their reading.   Every year the hundreds of pupils we work with, ‘discover’ the pleasure of reading, helping them to gain a crucial skill for life, both at school and beyond.  We specifically assist children who are not entitled to individual help through statutory funding.

.  Our project relies on the efforts of the community volunteers, who spend half an hour with each pupil twice a week in school term time.  The children and their mentor pursue a range of literacy-based activities, such as sharing books, playing games and enjoying conversation.  This encourages the building of the pupil’s literacy skills as well as their confidence and self-esteem.  All our volunteers go through a stringent recruitment process, including DBS checks and safeguarding, to ensure the best quality assistance is provided to the children.

A donation towards our work will help us recruit, train and support new volunteers in order that more children can be supported in Berkshire.

COVID 19 UPDATEWhilst we are not able to provide our 1-1 support in schools during the Covid 19 crisis, we are providing live storytelling and sharing activities across the web to help parents engage children with reading but as soon as schools resume our service will have a higher demand due to the children that have fallen behind with their reading

What has become apparent is that we are also going to have to expect a shortfall in funding for the charity as we are finding that our applications are being cancelled whilst a lot of donors concentrate on the immediate needs of those affected by COVID-19. This puts our vital support in jeopardy, as well as the long-term ability of the organisation to function once we are able to resume our services again. This would be disastrous for the children and schools that we support now as well as a sense of purpose for our volunteers, and for thousands more who will need us in the future.

Therefore, we need to appeal to all of our supporters to help us to continue in these challenging times, and to be ready to provide life-changing support to children when we are allowed to restart our 1-1 activities again. Your help today will ensure our children and schools are not forgotten in what are going to be some of the toughest days they have ever had.  We need to create a positive reading environment at home that will help encourage reading for pleasure now and into the future and we hope to be able to inspire families and their children to keep reading to make it fun

We wish you all good health over the coming weeks.

Your donation will go directly towards funding ABC to read’s work to support children and families affected by COVID-19. In the unlikely event that the funds raised exceed our funding requirements for this appeal, your gift will go to support the core costs for the charity and
