Christmas can be one of the most isolating times of the year. Nearly 1m people feel lonelier at Christmas, according to a 2016 report by Age UK.
Our group of volunteers put on this annual event to provide a free, fun social event to bring people together, hopefully creating new friendship and let them know they are not truly alone. We take care of every detail. We will pick people up from their houses in accessible transport, provide a hot three course Christmas meal (catering for any dietary requirements), with friendly volunteers breaking the ice and helping tables get to know each other. We provide interesting speakers from local businesses and organisations, and then finish with some entertainment, before we drop them safely home again.
We work with a diverse range of community organisations and elderly befriending groups such as Contact the Elderly and Age UK to access the more isolated people in our community - some people who have not been out of the house for a long time. We work very sensitively during the booking process and at the event itself to ensure that people feel safe, comfortable and enjoy themselves as much as possible.
The event costs £2600 to run. We have so far raised £500 (from the Anchor Society) but we have a long way to go - we really need your help!
