We are hoping to offset the fall in income due to Covid-19 restrictions, by asking members of the club and wider community to invest in us.

New stretch target

We'd like to invest in the facilities at the club to improve what we have to offer for our junior section, allowing them to thrive and to make the jump from junior cricket to our senior teams.

Who are we?

We are a cricket club for the people of the village of Farndon in Nottinghamshire and the surrounding area. People of all ages and a wide range of abilities are welcome at our club. We have junior members at All Stars (5-8), Kwik Cricket (8-11) and hardball U11 & U13 teams, plus 4 senior teams. Additionally this summer we were due to run the brand new ECB programme Dynamos as a summer holiday programme for 8-11 year olds. In the winter this year, we began providing a 12 week winter training programme. Off the pitch, we organise a number of fundraising events for the whole village, including live music events and an annual President’s Day.  In summer, Friday nights are our primary junior night (last season we had 65+ junior members) where the cricket field is packed with young people, parents, grandparents, family and friends from the village and surrounding areas. It is no exaggeration therefore to say that our club is a true community hub, keeping all the people in the village active and social, as well as helping to cultivate a shared sense of community in our village.

How do we contribute to our wider community?

As a club we do our best to promote physical activity through the medium of cricket to as many people as possible. We have strong links with the local primary school where one of our coaches attends an annual assembly to help encourage kids to come and try out cricket. This has proven to be an invaluable link to the community as our numbers have been gradually increasing year on year.

We also try to put on fun social events that are open to the public, from band nights at the local village hall to our Presidents Day. Our Presidents Day in particular attracts a very large crowd as it also doubles up as our village fête. This activates our local community with plenty of stalls such as cake sales, raffles and tombolas, whilst we also invite charities and local businesses to set up stands advertising who they are and what they do: all this whilst there is junior and senior cricket in the background, the BBQ in full swing and the bar open. It really is a fantastic day. We are doing our best to be Farndon’s centre of physical and social activity during the summer months; a real hub of activity for the whole of the local community to join.

Wherever possible, we also always look to support local charities whenever we can. For instance, this summer one of our players batted from sunrise to sunset on the summer solstice (a total of 16 hours and 38 minutes) for Newark-based mental health charity Shaw Mind. Whilst Covid restrictions meant we couldn't put on as big a show as we would have liked, we still achieved plenty of community engagement, whilst also raising just short of £3,000.

The Effect of Covid-19

Unfortunately, as a club that relies heavily on player membership and bar takings, we have seen a shortfall in the money we have been able to raise. Even during these unprecedented times bills still need to be paid, things such as insurance, utilities, ground maintenance just to name a few. But worst of all is the fact that we have not been able to play any cricket. The delivery of our first Dynamos programme during the summer holidays has unfortunately had to be cancelled, whilst our All Stars programme has also been suspended. Our two junior teams haven’t been able to play and train together, whilst over 60 kids have missed out on their Friday nights of fun that are such a big part of what we are at Farndon.

How Your Funding Can Help

We as a club are hoping to make huge strides on and off the pitch with the programmes and facilities that we can offer, we had big plans for summer 2020 but our income has obviously taken a hit due to the current coronavirus crisis, but we still want to see our club develop and provide a community service. We are offering our members ‘rewards’ to help with the financial costs of keeping our club moving forward during a time where income has been non existent. With the funds raised from this crowdfunder appeal it can help with the following in the short term, but much more in the long term:

1. Ensure that our ground is prepared for the return of recreational cricket, our ground staff have been working hard throughout this pandemic to maintain the square, outfield and machinery so that we are ready to get straight back at it when guidelines allow us to.

2. To make sure our coaches can have everything they need when larger group training is once again permitted, Martyn has been providing a tremendous service to the club so far offering 1-1 to our hardball juniors, but we really can’t wait to get the younger softball kids back and enjoying cricket too.

3. To help pay for any equipment needed for when play can resume, from cricket balls to hand sanitisers, whatever is needed we want to be in a financial position to provide to our members.

4. To allow us to book indoor facilities when they become available and provide indoor coaching activities during the winter to make up for lost time during this summer.

5. But most importantly the money raised will allow us to keep advancing as a club, particularly within our junior section, we already have four county girl players and one county boy player, we want to keep increasing those opportunities for our players and in the long run there is scope for more juniors and possibly even women’s cricket to be based at Farndon.

Help us secure the clubs future now, so that we can continue to prosper in times to come.
