Project aim

Handmade Childrens Clothes with a Conscience making local and global impacts.

About the project

Welcome to FairPlay Clothing! My aim is to offer handmade children’s clothing with a conscience, making local and global impacts using fair trade and recycled fabrics, shopping locally for materials/accessories/etc, and giving back by supporting local charities through proceeds. I created FairPlay Clothing in June 2014. As a mum of 2, I found myself in a place where I didn’t recognise myself, just lost in the daily routine of life and feeling a bit like a hamster on a wheel. I thought about what I love doing – sewing – and something I’m passionate about – the world around me and being a mum, and came up with FairPlay Clothing. I make everything in my front room in West Molesey on my Singer. Occasionally my daughter Mary will help. I’m hoping one day she'll be making clothes with me. She has lots of great ideas. I shop as local as I can to Molesey for fabric/haberdashery, upcycle donated fabric, and use Fair Trade Fabric from India and Guatemala. My customers know that when they buy from FairPlay Clothing, I made it, and that their purchase is making a difference to a local shop owner, charity, or to the amazing women in Guatemala contributing to their educational and economical empowerment. I enjoy telling them that I bought the ribbon from my friend’s shop on our high street or sharing a story about where a piece of donated fabric came from and how I’ve given it a new lease of life. FairPlay Clothing also gives me an opportunity to support local charities through proceeds like Home Start Elmbridge who support mothers with children aged 0-5 who are struggling to cope for various reasons. As a past home visiting volunteer with Home Start Elmbridge, I saw first hand how their support changes lives.

I have been selling mainly at school fairs and some small local markets.  I also have an Esty shop but I really need to be a regular fixture at a bigger market.  A good friend of mine suggested I put forward a project to CrowdFund Elmbridge seeing that I was struggling to come up with funds to cover the bigger market stall fees along with stall holders insurance, much needed sewing machine repairs, and costs for Fair Trade fabric. I have tried to do this on my own for the last year and it is a struggle but I love it and I don’t want to give up on it. The target money raised will be used to cover the following costs – Monthly Market Stall Fees for 2 markets a month for the next 6 months, Stall Holder Insurance, Wholesale Fabric Orders, PR materials (flyers, business cards, banner for stalls, Mumprenuers annual membership), Clothing Labels, Water Weights for Market Stall Gazebos – and I believe it will give me just the help I need to make FairPlay Clothing a success. That means giving back to the community, supporting small business, contributing to the ongoing success of the Maya Traditions Foundations in Guatemala, and hopefully my children will see the importance of being part of making a difference, no matter how big or small.

All pledgers to FairPlay Clothing will receive a special thank you and your name will be on the FairPlay Clothing Wall of Friends within a week of hitting the target.  Those pledging £30 or more will also receive a 50% gift voucher.

Thank you in advance for supporting FairPlay Clothing - Handmade Children's Clothes with a Conscience.  Please share with your friends and family.

My lovely friends at Belle Epoque in East Molesey let me set up shop at the Pre Season Shopping Night last year.

Duck Pond Market in Richmond.  I would love to be a regular at this market.

My favourite model wearing a FairPlay Skirt made with Fair Trade fabric handwoven by the amazing artisans from the Maya Traditions Foundation in Guatemala.

My other favourite model doing what he does best, having fun, in his cool FairPlay shorts.
