This project will provide COVID-19 related support and materials, tailored towards individuals who have a pre-existing lung disease. The project will reduce the barriers of accessing information for those with low literacy levels or learning difficulties and those who do not speak English as their first language. Your donations will allow us to produce easy to read COVID-19 fact sheets and accurately translate materials into multiple different languages.
People with lung disease are experiencing a troubling time and we have been approached in record numbers by people concerned about COVID-19. Issues such as shielding, going back to work, wearing masks, seeing family and attending regular medical appointments are just some of the concerns we have been responding to.
Since the start of the pandemic, we have supported over 1 million people by responding with accurate information and actionable steps people with lung conditions and their carers can take to protect themselves. However, the need for evidence-based, quality information for groups who do not have access information they can easily understand has become evident.
People with lung conditions and individuals from Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic & Refugee (BAMER) communities are more vulnerable and disproportionately affected by COVID-19. While multifactorial in cause, appropriate and accessible information can reduce barriers to effective healthcare. This is also the case for individuals with low-literacy levels. So, our reliable translations into languages that are most commonly spoken by minority ethnic groups and the creation easy to read documents will reduce healthcare inequalities and empower individuals to take ownership of their health at a time when they need this most.
ELF’s network of >200 patient organisations and 10 Patient Advisory Group’s (PAGs) advise ELF on all its activities, ensuring patient input is at the very heart of the organisation. We utilise our unique partnership with the European Respiratory Society (ERS) to draw upon the knowledge and expertise from a multi-national pool of patients and healthcare professionals (HCPs). This enables us to provide up-to-date, accurate and accessible information about maintaining and improving lung health, including information about COVID-19.
