On 20th October 2017 I am going to be travelling to Ethiopia to take part in a gruelling 7 day trek across the Simien Mountains to raise money for and awareness of this small but amazing charity.
The girl in the centre of the above picture is Mary, the eldest of four siblings. When she was 10 she was single-handedly looking after her three younger siblings after the sudden death of their parents. Hungry and homeless they were taken in by The Ethiopia Link and provided with the love, care and education they needed. Sadly Mary’s younger sister passed away from Cancer a couple of years later. Today Mary is a trained nurse working at a hospital in Addis Ababa.
The Ethiopia Link runs a small orphanage in Addis designed to be more like a home than an orphanage. Children are cared for, for as long as they need. In this way Mary, for example, was able to complete her nursing training whilst still living at home and only moved out when she was ready/ able to support herself.
Ethiopia has an estimated 150,000 children living on the streets in appalling conditions and the Ethiopia Link is trying to help as many of these children as possible.
