The Essex Horse & Donkey Sanctuary was founded in 2001 by Andrew Blackbourn. It was born out of one man's love of horses and donkeys and his concern for their welfare. At present we provide food, shelter, grazing, veterinary care and blacksmithing for over sixty animals that have been rescued from all over Essex. Many more need our help.
For years Andrew has shouldered the considerable financial burden as the sanctuary continues to grow. Anyone wishing to donate to the sanctuary can have complete faith that all donations will be used to improve the well-being of the animals in our care.
Our aim is to continue growing, however, we can't do this without the kindness of your donations. If you can find it in your heart to give a donation, however small, please click on our Donate Now button. You can be assured that your chosen charity will directly improve the lives of horses and donkeys throughout the county.
We would like to raise £5,000 to install safety fencing in the fields, to buy field shelters to protect the animals in all weathers, to have stables for the horses that need them, to build a barn, to build an office and toilet on site so that we can get volunteers on board, as without these things, we are unable to have volunteers at the sanctuary. We would also like to secure larger land for all the horses to be on one site. We also need funds to pay for veterinary care and farrier and feeding costs.
We are doing our best to become a registered charity but without trustees it is proving very difficult for us to get any funding or donations.
We are able to offer pony grooming days and hands on experiences with horses in return for help and also team building days for companies as a reward for any help that can be offered.
