We did it
On 11th July 2017 we successfully raised £1,805 with 22 supporters in 28 days

Exeter Street Arts Festival - Saturday 26th August 2017

Music In Devon Initiative's mission is to bring colour, laughter, music and dancing to the city centre streets of Exeter and surrounding neighbourhoods, through a one-day showcase of vibrant live art performances and displays.

We aim to celebrate the homegrown talent of our great city, and we will bring you a range of artforms, including: live music (over 12 stages and busking pitches); various styles of dance; graffiti art; theatre; poetry; storytelling; circus arts; and a diverse variety of visual artforms.

Not only do we wish to create amazing art on the street, but we are keen to extend the festival further and offer a  range of events and activities that the public can get involved in. These include (but aren't limited to):

  • A live graffiti art workshop suitable for all the family - led by the super-talented Miss C's Graffiti Academy
  • An alternative guided street art tour - not your standard red coat tour! - hosted by Substance & Shadow Theatre
  • Participatory dance workshops - led by Abes Cisse
  • Interactive theatre and storytelling sessions - hosted by Widsith & Deor
  • Circus skills workshops led by a professional circus troupe
  • Open mic sessions
  • A number of pop-up pianos with special guest performances and "open" slots
  • Arts and crafts stalls in the High Street and at The Transit Shed on Exeter Quay
  • An afternoon of DJ sets at The Bishop Blaize on Exeter Quay - hosted by Jam The Channel
  • An after-party at Exeter Phoenix with live music from Datura, Dakar Audio Club, Claibekas, and Freaky Oscar, plus Jam The Channel DJs.

To attract the best artists, we have to commit to covering their costs, and this means supplying paint and other materials, covering travel and parking expenses, and provision of a refreshment allowance. We also have many other necessary costs to cover, such as printing and publicity, hire of sound equipment and engineers, insurance, website costs and volunteers' expenses.

We rely heavily on the passion and commitment of a large number of local artists as well as the support of our small team of volunteers to make the festival happen, so it is important that we raise enough funds to ensure that we are not attempting the impossible, or asking everyone to stretch their generosity too far. No contribution is too small, and all pledges and donations are hugely appreciated - so please do take a look at all the fantastic rewards on offer to the right of this page :)

This is YOUR festival, so please let know if you would like to get involved in any way - whether it's performing, volunteering on the day, or helping us to organise an aspect of the event.

Help us to celebrate and promote our city's artistic and musical talent - together we can truly bring Exeter to life this August!

N.B. Keep an eye on our website for line-up announcements coming soon.

Just a small selection of some of the feedback we received from last year's festival...

The last Saturday in August was the date of the inaugural Exeter Street Arts Festival, and Chartman were delighted to be able to support the project by supporting one of the pitches for the day. With continuous entertainment through the day between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. the city centre was transformed in a vibrant kaleidoscope of sound and colour. The organisers and artists deserve the highest praise for putting on such a fantastic show.
