This is an appeal for a mentoring project called Each One Teach One.
The programme is being run by the Black, African and Asian Therapy Network (BAATN) so that people of Black, African and Asian heritage can flourish in the therapy profession and contribute to the development of therapy for these groups within the UK mental health system.
It is well understood that these groups are more likely to drop out of their courses, change their training providers more often and take longer to qualify.
This mentoring program gives counselling, psychotherapy and psychology students confidence in knowing that they can be part of, what is traditionally a white middle-class profession, and be supported with the many ethical, spiritual, beliefs and value systems that can be overlooked when one is from a minority.
The Each One Teach One project has been set up by volunteers and is delivered by volunteers. It survives through BAATN membership fees, donations and crowdfunding campaigns like this.
Ultimately this project seeks to address the poor statistics on BAME mental health. A summary of the research into BAME mental health.

Comments from past students on the program:
"I feel truly understood and acknowledged and leave feeling okay to enter back into my training."
"a safe space to share my experiences that have been triggered by my training."
Comments from past mentors:
"This service is an essential requirement for people of colour who wish to proceed further within the therapy sphere."
"There is a sense of satisfaction to know that I can help another person along this intensive, yet fulfilling journey, which is well worth the effort and time invested."
I enjoyed mentoring on this project and I want to support other practitioners to have the rich experience of seeing someone find their voice and their unique form of growth as they go through the rigours of psychotherapy, counselling or psychology training.

"Mentoring is one of the most important ways in which we can support the next generation; as well as a way of us developing throughout our careers."
