Learning at Green Lane School is ‘Topic’ based so that each term’s learning is set to the context of a single, broad topic.
The children love this approach to learning and the whole term’s curriculum is aligned to the topic so that their learning feels natural.
We would like to include a topic for every school year where the children are challenged to plan and make things which they then price up to ‘sell’ at an end of term finale. This gives them an end to end experience of creating a product for resale. As they get older, we will focus more on factors such as:
- cost of materials
- manufacturing processes
- how to mark up a product to sell on
- how to market their creations so that people will want to buy them
These learning areas offer a brilliant real life expansion to their Maths, DT, PSHE and English work and we are excited to be introducing these kinds of business skills to the children in a way which is fun and makes sense to them.
Building on the success of our previous project where we are aiming to teach children more about money, we would like to extend our financial curriculum to teach the children about budget planning too.
We would like to not only teach an understanding of the cost of goods and services, but we would also like to inspire entrepreneurial thinking in our children.
