New stretch target

If we receive more than our target this will pay for a computer for the project staff and make a contribution to the bills for the county office, including phone bills, stationery, water, electricity and rent. This will allow the staff to work more efficiently and ensure the project activities continue smoothly.

Project aim

Empower women and girls in Kajiado County, Kenya, so they can end female genital mutilation.

About the project

What are we doing?

Our local partner FIDA Kenya will work to empower women and girls in Kajiado County to stop violence and end harmful traditional practices like female genital mutilation. They will learn their rights so they can stand up against violence and know how to access medical, legal and psychological support. FIDA Kenya will work with communities to end female genital mutilation. Every donation will be matched by the UK government, so if you donate £50, we will receive £100.

Harmful traditional practices, including female genital mutilation, are common and persistent in Kenya. In Kajiado County, where the project is based, nearly three out of four women and girls have experienced female genital mutilation. The practice is a fundamental violation of women and girls’ human rights. It can also be extremely painful and dangerous and often leads to complications during pregnancy and birth - the two leading causes of death among girls aged 15-19 in Kenya. Moreover, girls who experience female genital mutilation are less likely to finish school, thus denying them their right to education and reducing their chances of being economically independent in the future.

How will your donations change lives?

This project will have a huge impact on the lives of women and girls in Kajiado County, Kenya. Every pound given will be matched by the UK government, so if you donate £50, we will receive £100.

It will all begin with FIDA Kenya training 45 (30 women and 15 men) community leaders, including elders, chiefs and women leaders, about violence against women and girls, female genital mutilation as a violation of human rights and the law that prohibits the practice. These people will lead the campaign to end female genital mutilation. Your donations will provide transport, refreshments and stationery for the training sessions, as well as hire the hall to hold the sessions in. In total, your donations will support 237 women and 115 men to attend the events and they will pass on their knowledge to another 600 people.

Your support will also allow the community leaders to speak at local events, schools, churches and women's groups. They will be provided with transport, refreshments and a professional facilitator to assist them. They will spread awareness of the dangers of female genital mutilation and the laws surrounding it.

To maximise the reach of the campaign, your donations will be used to produce two radio programmes raising awareness of violence against women and girls, women's rights and the law that prohibits female genital mutilation. They will also give information on how to receive support for women and girls who have experienced it. 200,000 people will hear the programmes overall.

Finally, during the 16 Days of Activism campaign (25th November - 10th December) communities will hold events, including community dramas and information sessions, on female genital mutilation and violence against women and girls. This will capitalise on the extra publicity surrounding 16 Days and help the campaign reach more people across the area.

Thousands of women’s lives will be transformed through this project. And every donation made will be matched by the UK government, helping us to change the lives of even more women and girls.

Double your donation

All donations will be matched by the UK government pound for pound meaning every pound you give will help even more women and girls stop FGM.
