As you may know, I spent many years living in Sri Lanka and it is a country close to my heart. It has been devastating to watch from afar as COVID-19 took away jobs and tore apart livelihoods.
Up until May, however, Sri Lanka had managed to keep their cases fairly under control and had remained open to tourism. In May, with the extreme new wave of COVID that swept through India, however, the situation in Sri Lanka quickly changed, and it re-closed its borders and went into lockdown.
The South Coast of Sri Lanka is almost completely reliant on tourism, and many businesses have been closed down since the start of the pandemic, with thousands of people out of work for months. Lockdown has exacerbated the problems caused by this. Lockdown in Sri Lanka does not come with payouts from the government, and so people are left to fend for themselves in an area where money has been drying up for a long time. There are now people who are desperate, starving, and struggling to make ends meet. They do not know how long this situation will continue, but right now, they need to ensure that their basic needs are covered.
I am hoping to raise a small amount of money that can be put towards getting out rations to families who are now desperately in need of help. We will distribute bags of items that are needed by families such as dry foods, rice, vegetables, etc.
Any contribution, big or small, would be so welcome and is SO needed at this extremely difficult and challenging time. Food in Sri Lanka is not expensive by Western standards and even just $50 can help to sustain a family for a few weeks. Please, if you can spare a little money, do.
