Born in a violent and neglected favela community in Rio de Janeiro, Alan Duarte has suffered immense personal tragedy. Until now, he has never seen a male family member grow old and die from natural causes. However, he dreams of finding salvation and building a better future for his son and his community through his boxing project Abraço Campeão (Embracing Champions).
Without any salaries and with very little support, Alan and his team have seen the project grow from 10 members to over 100. the team currently work 6 days a week to provide:
- Boxing classes for children and young adults
- Kickboxing classes for young adults
- Personal development sessions twice monthly, covering a range of topics pertinent to local young people, including gender awareness, sexuality, racism
- Youth leadership, through “Champion Generation” – a group of elected young people representing the voice of participants
All this whilst negotiating the difficulties of working in a conflict zone. Just this week one policeman and three members of the community have died from armed violence there, including an innocent 14 year old boy.
We hope to raise enough money to give Embracing Champions the opportunity to go from an organisation run on voluntary effort and goodwill to a structured organisation offering improved support, preventing young people from becoming involved in or victims of violence, and offering paths to success. Recently, Alan’s twelve year old cousin Lucas became the tenth member of his family to die from armed violence, and Alan feels that if he had not been so occupied with single handedly running Embracing Champions, he may have been able to prevent Lucas’ death from happening.
Reaching our target would enable Alan to buy much needed equipment to replace the old hand me downs that are falling apart. It will also enable him to hire three new part-time members of staff: a boxing coach to allow Alan to offer classes to 7-14 year olds; a youth worker to support the most vulnerable young people; and a monitoring and evaluation professional to measure and evidence the impact of Alan’s work. Finally, it will allow Alan to organise a series of community events, showcasing the sporting and all-round potential of the area's young people, and giving a platform to share and explain the benefits of boxing and martial arts.

Nascido no Complexo do Alemão, um dos conjuntos de favelas mais violentos e carentes do Rio de Janeiro, Alan Duarte sofreu uma imensa tragédia pessoal. Até agora, ele nunca viu um membro da família do sexo masculino envelhecer e morrer de causas naturais. No entanto, ele sonha em encontrar a salvação e construir um futuro melhor para seu filho e sua comunidade através de seu projeto de boxe Abraço Campeão.
Sem qualquer salário e com muito pouco apoio, Alan e sua equipe viram o projeto crescer de 10 participantes para mais de 100. A equipe atualmente trabalha 6 dias por semana para fornecer:
- Aulas de boxe para crianças e jovens
- Aulas de Kickboxing para jovens
- Aulas de desenvolvimento pessoal duas vezes por mês, lidando com uma série de temas pertinentes para os jovens locais, incluindo sensibilização sobre questões de género, sexualidade, racismo
- Liderança juvenil, através da "Geração Campeão" - um grupo de jovens eleitos para representar a voz dos participantes
Eles fazem tudo isto no meio de uma zona de conflito. Só esta semana um policial e três membros da comunidade morreram de violência armada lá, incluindo um menino inocente de 14 anos.
Esperamos captar dinheiro suficiente para dar ao Abraço Campeão a oportunidade de virar de uma organização mantida pelo esforço voluntário e boa vontade para uma organização estruturada que ofereça um apoio melhor, evitando que os jovens locais se envolvam ou sejam vítimas de violência e ofereçendo caminhos para o sucesso. Ha pouco tempo, o primo de Alan, Lucas, com doze anos, tornou-se o décimo membro da sua família a morrer de violência armada, e Alan sente que, se ele não estivesse tão ocupado com a gestão do Abraço Campeão, podia ter evitado a morte do Lucas.
Alcançar nossa meta permitiria ao Alan comprar o equipamento necessário para substituir a materia velha que a organizacão tem tido que usar. Ele tambien dara a oportunidade para o Alan contratar três novos funcionarios: um treinador de boxe para poder abrir classes para meninos de 7-14 anos de idade; um assistente social para apoiar aos jovens mais vulneráveis; E um profissional de monitoramento e avaliação para medir e evidenciar o impacto do trabalho de Alan. Finalmente, permitirá que Alan organize uma série de eventos comunitários, mostrando o potencial desportivo dos jovens do projeto e dando uma plataforma para compartilhar e explicar os benefícios do boxe e das artes marciais.
