Research shows the negative impact of loneliness and isolation on a person's general health and wellbeing, with mental health charities recently finding that millions of people report feeling lonely on a daily basis.
Men's Sheds address this - they are about meeting like-minded people, having someone with whom to share worries and concerns. This in turn reduces isolation and loneliness and allows men to deal with mental health challenges more easily, thereby reducing reliance on public services.
Elgin and District Men's Shed have been meeting weekly for almost a year now. We have over 60 members, whose ages range from mid-40 to 81 years old. We are open to all men over 18 with time on their hands. Some members have physical challenges, some are recovering from various ills, or recently bereaved, some have had the Shed recommended to them by their GP, some attend with their carers.
Our aim is to provide a friendly social environment where we can interact with and enjoy our hobbies with others, teach and learn from each other and offer support to each other.
Any funds raised will go a long way to seeing our aim of a stand-alone, sustainable, low-cost Men's Shed - there are always people retiring, leaving full-time work, or otherwise at a loose end.
Achieving this will lead to improving physical, emotional and mental health as well as meeting new friends and socialising in a setting not available elsewhere in the community.
