The last month has been something of a whirlwind. At the start of May, Colchester Green Party won its first ever seat on Colchester Borough Council. We’ve put in years of hard work to win this election, and this work paid off in a big way when Mark Goacher was elected with a ginormous 800+ majority. In the process, he managed to oust the Conservative group leader, and did so in style!
At the European elections, we leapfrogged both the Conservatives and Labour to become Colchester's third biggest party. This resulted in us helping to elect the first ever Green MEP from the Eastern region!
We’re ecstatic to finally have Green representation in Colchester, and would love to return even more fresh, exciting, passionate, hard-working Green councillors at next year’s elections. But, to do so, we need to boost our funds so we can continue spreading our unique message far and wide.
The Green Party receives no funding from rich corporate donors or trade unions. We are financed entirely by small, regular donations from our members and supporters. Can you chip in to help us get more representatives onto the council next year?
A message from Cllr. Mark Goacher: "I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped out with our campaign in any way by leafleting, canvassing, putting up posters and in lots of other ways. You have all contributed to us winning our first seat in Colchester and this would not have happened without your help. I also want to say thank you to everyone in Castle Ward who voted for me. I'm humbled by the size of the majority, and now the real hard work of changing Colchester for the better begins. We've shown that where Greens listen to resident's concerns and focus our time and energy on the issues they care about, we can win seats, even taking votes off the Conservatives. The glass ceiling has truly been broken in Colchester."
Green Campaign Officer Blake Roberts says: "We're ecstatic to have proven ourselves as a credible option at this council election. Not only did we manage a phenomenal win, beating the Conservatives in central Colchester, but we also increased our vote share across the borough and did better in most seats than ever before. We can win even more seats next year and send a strong team of Green councillors to support Mark in the Town Hall, but to do that, we need the funds to make that ambition a reality. If you can chip in to boost our funds, we will work tirelessly to get more Greens on Colchester Council. Please donate today!"
