Nurture Black and Asian psychological therapists through their training so they can contribute to Mental Health services in the UK.

This is an appeal for a mentoring project called Each One Teach One.

The reason this mentoring programme was started was to address the poor statistics on Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) mental health. A summary of the research BAME mental health. We at the Black, African and Asian Therapy Network are appealing for funding to support people from BAME communities into the counselling, psychotherapy and psychology professions so that they can contribute to the development of therapy for these groups within the mental health system.

Listen to comments from some of the mentoring team.

There is little research with regard to the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) counselling training experiences but it is well understood in the profession that BAME students are more likely to drop out of their courses, change their training provider more often and take longer to qualify as psychotherapists.

The mentoring program will give students confidence in knowing that they can be part of, what is traditionally a white middle-class profession, and support them with the many ethical, spiritual, personal beliefs and value systems that can be overlooked when one is from a minority.

Some comments from students and mentors who've been through the program:

"I feel truly understood and acknowledged here and I leave feeling okay to enter back into my training"

"a safe space to share my experiences that have been triggered by my training"

"This service is an essential requirement for people of colour who wish to proceed further within the therapy sphere"

"There is a sense of satisfaction to know that I can help another person, along this intensive, yet fulfilling journey, which is well worth the effort and time, invested"
