Planning out a dissertation trip to help me complete my degree in the best way possible

by Ellinor Lennie in Plymouth, England, United Kingdom

Introduction: what's this about?

Hi there, I'm Ellinor (Ellie to many), and I'm currently a third-year Filmmaking BA (Hons) student about to begin my dissertation about the representation of Edinburgh on film from the 1960s to modern-day, as it was a subject I felt wasn't really explored too much, and matched me perfectly.

On my dad's side of the family, I'm half Scottish and I wanted to do something that touched on that aspect of my life as it was something I hadn't really explored all that much. I've also thought about potentially either continuing with my education after university up in Edinburgh or moving there to work in either television or film as there sadly isn't much opportunity where I originally come from (Wiltshire) for those types of careers, with the nearest media hubs to home being Bristol, Cardiff or London.

As well as this, I became inspired to revisit this after a discussion I had had with my friends about memorable films from our childhood, of which I brought up Greyfriars Bobby (the 1960s version by Walt Disney Studios), and my mum making me aware that the full movie was available to view on-demand online. This made me more intrigued to start looking into the story of Greyfriars Bobby once more, and then led me to think about how other films since then have represented Edinburgh on their screens.

So, why a Crowdfunder?

After speaking with my lecturers and the heads of my university school, the idea of a crowdfunder was put to me to try and gain more support for this cause, as they could tell it was something I was passionate about doing to help further my dissertation and put the city's portrayal into context, potentially being able to add illustrations from personal experience to the essay too.

I did also try looking into funding schemes offered by my university, but unfortunately the schemes that were available or could help me were either not matching my personal circumstances, or fell at a time that wouldn't be beneficial to me (one such scholarship that was presented to me, for example, opened up after my dissertation was due to be completed meaning that it wouldn't be applicable to me), hence why it was suggested that I try crowdfunding for support.

So, how much would you be looking for?

After sitting and working out the costs of transport, lodging (and food or potential trip activities, for example going to the Museum of Edinburgh to see Greyfriars Bobby's collar, or visiting the Filmhouse space in the city), I'd be looking at around £200 - £225 to cover costs. This comes in the form of flights, transport to and from the airport over in Bristol, lodging in a hostel in the city centre and any food that I would be eating during my time on the trip.
