What is it?

The Derby Poetry Festival will take place from Thursday November 23rd to Sunday November 26th 2017. A  number of the headline poets have said that they are willing to provide free community based, creative writing workshops on the day of their headline event. and we need to raise funds to pay them to do this.

Artists booked to appear are Tony Walsh whose poem about Manchester was featured in the media after the Manchester Arena Bombing, reggae poet Linton Kwesi Johnson, former Derbyshire Poet Laureate Cathy Grindrod and Trinidadian poet, Shivanee Ramlochan. Ticket information can be found on the Facebook page here  https://www.facebook.com/DerbyPoetryFestival/posts/474698732913881:1

What do we need the extra funds for?

We want the festival to be as diverse as possible and to reflect the varied communities within the city so are wish to organise creative writing workshops within areas of the city and with local groups who may not ordinarily engage with poetry and creative writing.

The workshops will introduce those taking part to techniques for starting, building and editing poems and with information on how to access local poetry groups and open mic opportunities.  The Festival is organised by a not for profit Community Interest Company and we need to raise £1000 to make these workshops happen.

Why do we need it?

We have the support of Derby City Council, Derby Live and Writing East Midlands but at this point, very little arts grant funding, and would like to pay the artists fairly in return for leading the workshops.  The artists  are willing to provide community base workshops at reduced rates and we need £1000 to do this.

If we raise £1000, the workshops will be free, held in local community venues and open to participants regardless of previous writing experience or background. Each donation will move us closer to staging these sessions during what is promising to be Derby's a vibrant inaugural Derby Poetry Festival.

Every £10 funds a free place for someone who may not otherwise be able to access creative writing opportunities so please help the festival open up creative writing opportunities in the city by donating today.
