I got Covid 2 days before October 1st which slightly scuppered my plans, but after refunding the money back to the supporters, I have been inundated with messages from people who want to still support the Canoe club and the Weybridge river users.
On the 1st October 2021 I will be heading out to The Sahara Desert to attempt to complete the iconic Marathon des Sables. For those that don't know the event, this is a 156 mile 7 day stage race across the Sahara Desert with temperatures reaching up to 50 degrees. This is a self-sufficient race so I will be carrying everything on my back - food, cooking stove, bed, sleeping bag etc. for the entire 7 days. A rehydrated chicken korma will be my only luxury and having just started to pack, the task ahead hit home when I had to pack the anti-venom pump!
With such a challenge it seemed only right to try and use the opportunity to raise some funds and I wanted to do it for something close to home. My youngest daughter Emma is a member of Elmbridge Canoe Club. The Club provides fantastic volunteered coaching and training for all paddlers and is a fantastic club which I feel proud to support. It is situated on the banks of the River Thames in Weybridge. The club gets lots of traffic not only from paddlers but from walkers, runners, rowers, cyclists etc. We have always talked about all the sporting activities that go on at the Canoe Club and that a Defibrillator would be a fantastic thing to have.
£750 gets a portable defibrillator 1500 gets one that will be mounted to the outside of the Canoe club for anyone that may need it.
Thanks for supporting me and Elmbridge Canoe Club.
Best Phil Sumner
