Project aim

We are going to publish an illustrated book about a little bear in the big city.

About the project

My name is Karamel… a bydlím v Londýně

Learning a new language is not easy. But if you have friends to help, it can be fun. Karamel is a little Czech bear in London who does not even know how to say ‘Hello’ or ‘Hi’. But with the help of some friendly children, he learns English, finds new friends and discovers London.

This story was inspired by kids from Czech-English families in London, who come to Czech school every Saturday. Sometimes they struggle, sometimes they can’t remember a word they have heard a hundred times, and sometimes they feel a little lonely, because their friends often return to the Czech Republic.

Is this book bilingual?

Yes and no.

No because it is not a parallel text, where one page is in Czech, and opposite is the English translation.

Yes, because both languages are used, and both are a natural part of the narration.

As children read they learn phrases, words, idioms and sounds, either in Czech or in English. The language of this book imitates the language of bilingual children who mix languages while speaking.

Is the book aimed at Czech-speaking children or English-speaking children?

Both! A Czech-speaking child can learn a lot of new English words and phrases. A Czech-studying child whose first language is English can improve his or her Czech.

Why are we looking for financial support?

We want to create the book in a high quality printed format, and we want as many children as possible to read it. Our aim is to print 1000 copies and release them in England, the Czech Republic, and other countries with bilingual Czech/English kids.

How can you help?

We are looking for £1,500.00, which will cover part of the print cost. The rest of the sponsorship money has already been successfully raised.
