Natural hair has been something that has been very hard to embrace growing up within the UK. The media and other influences within society have always portrayed beautiful females as having long luscious silky hair, but seem to have left out those with other types of textured hair. Growing up with Afro textured hair, there never seemed to be much choice in stores on products suitable for my particular hair type. Currently there has been a shift of views towards natural hair, and many people seem to be embracing their natural texture. However I would love to be able to support the many people out there who are struggling to embrace the way they look. For the first set of workshops I plan on finding a set of suitable spaces within the local area of Barking & Dagenham and expanding to other areas across the UK (Lewisham, Enfield, Haringey). I also plan on involving influential people from the local area e.g. business owners as well people from my University, to share their life experiences on how they managed to reach their goals and find self-confidence.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
This project will definitely make a huge impact within the local area and others we hope eventually. As our aim is to reach out to those struggling with there identity and teach them to embrace and celebrate the individual that they are. This new cross-cultural research highlights the reality that low body-esteem prevents many from fully engaging in life. So we hope to make a difference and change the perception that people have about themselves, by turning all the negative thoughts into positives. This is also an opportunity to bring people from the local communities together and allow us to empower each other to reach our goals.
