Calne Central - Youth & Community Centre: Calne in Tune has been operating since 2015 promoting and providing opportunities for Music, Arts & Crafts in the town.
We have worked with Calne Town Council, Wiltshire Council Library Service and local Pub & Clubs.
Many of our Musician, Art and Craft Members have been involved in fundraising for local charities and assisting young Musicians & Artists to advance their talents.
We realised early on that there were inadequate resources for supporting and promoting musical, artistic and crafting skills and that Calne Town itself had inadequate Youth & Community Facilities that can be used daily, daytime and/or evening.
We sought various option to broaden those community options available, including taking on the Priestley Grove Youth Centre for wider Youth & Community Activities, focusing upon Music, Arts, Crafts a couple of years back.
Frustrated with trying to get Community Assets returned to Community use we took the bold step of seeking commercial providers who would assist us in getting the project started.
With the help of Andrew Stibbard, the Calne Town Council, Community Hub & Calne in Tune Volunteers and Wiltshire Council Community Workers encouragement, we now have a building for the use by Community Groups of all kinds which we have named CALNE CENTRAL.
We now occupy the Old Dixons & FM Furniture Building at 20 Church Street. Stibbard have been very generous in providing it at an affordable rent, on a rolling 3-month lease, without the usual heavy obligations and penalties.
Despite all the restrictions that lock down has brought us we are still operating and are supervised by DBS Checked, Highly Trained & Experienced Community & Youth Workers with many years of experience.
We have clear guidance concerning responsibilities regarding Safeguarding, Health & Safety, Health & Hygiene and Social Distancing, displayed in plain English at various points in the very public, open access areas of the building.
We have Bikes for Sale, Disability Items available for loan a Community Fridge & Freezer (Free food for those in need). We also have Low Cost & Donations only Clothing & Shoes, Computer & Internet Access, Mental Health & Homelessness Support and so much more.
We have raised money to support the running costs of the building via some of these avenues but unfortunately due to the restrictions we have faced we have been unable to raise the money we so desperately need to cover these costs for the next three months.
The original plan was to be self-sustainable though hiring of the various rooms and building spaces available such as our Arts and Crafts rooms upstairs and music room for the use of recording and hiring practice spaces.
We also wanted to raise money by offering a youth disco and creating an area where people could come and meet for a coffee and cake. Lock down has drastically affected our ability to be able to offer these things to the wider public.
We have been concentrating on offering the most vulnerable in our town the support of food, clothing, bedding, household items and emotional support during what has been a crisis for many people.
We have not turned anyone away seeking our help as we are non-judgemental nor prejudice in how we see people. Now we need your help as a community to help us see out the rest of our vision.
We have many ideas in place but we need a building that will accommodate them. So please support us with anything you can offer and make a difference to our town to help it become a Central area for Music, Arts and Crafts plus offering an area for the Community and Youth which we really need.
