Who we are

Pregnancy Counselling and Care (Scotland) is a grass-roots organisation that directly helps women and families living in hardship or suffering in distress, of any kind, due to pregnancy-related issues. To this end, we offer material aid in the form of baby clothes and equipment for free to families referred to us by health agencies and midwives - this is donated directly from the public and is checked for quality before going to a family in need. We also offer free professional counselling to anyone with pregnancy related concerns. This includes but is not limited to concerns about infertility, miscarriage, termination, depression, and anxiety. Our counselling is regulated by COSCA (the professional counselling organisation in Scotland) and we place no limit on the amount of sessions that can be accessed. Free to access open ended therapy is rare to find, but PCC(S) believes that pregnancy related issues strike at the very core of a person. We feel our unique service allows time for full resolution of any issues experienced by our clients. We also offer fast-track counselling, where someone in distress will be seen within a week of referral for one to three sessions when a time-sensitive crisis arises. Again, this service is free, although donations are gratefully received.

What we do - Material Aid

Our supply of baby and children's clothes and equipment supports women, children and families on low - or no - income. We also work with those who have no access to public funds. This direct support allows any funds families do have available to be spent on basic necessities, such as housing and food. We are also able to offer Food Vouchers to families in need. This improves the health of the parents we work with and reduces their anxiety about being able to provide for their children's needs.

What we do - Long term relationship building and support

PCC(S) also serves as a social network centre whereby out staff maintain links with each family for a number of years. Through offering professional counselling, we are able to alleviate suffering and build confidence and self-esteem in individuals experiencing pregnancy-related issues. Through building a long-term counselling relationship with a trained therapist, our clients gain improved health and well-being, and a reduction in anxiety symptoms and depression.

What we do - Empowering women experiencing domestic violence

Many of our clients have experienced (or continue to experience) domestic abuse. The counselling and long-term support that we provide allows time for our clients to process and understand their situation. When a woman feels empowered it can be life-changing for both her and her children.

Who we help

We provide impartial and non-judgemental counselling to individuals contemplating termination, those who have experienced a miscarriage, suffer from PTSD after a difficult birth, experience postnatal depression or are facing any other difficult pregnancy-related issues. This service is accessible to both men and women. This service also crosses all ethnic boundaries and many of out clients are from the BME group, or are refugees. Demand for our service increases year on year.  Last year alone we helped 379 families with material aid, and offered 648 sessions of counselling. This year we are set to support even more families experiencing difficult times.

This campaign

We do not receive any statutory funding and rely purely on the generosity of grants and donors like yourself. Recently, one of our long-term funders has stopped supporting us and as a small charity, any changes to our expected finances can have a big impact on our ability to keep delivering our services.  We feel it is important that a non-judgemental and impartial service like ours remains available to families and individuals who may need us.

For this reason, we are asking for your help in order for us to keep providing material, emotional, psychological and health support to a growing number of fathers, mothers, and children who need access to free and impartial services in Edinburgh and rely on us for support. Join us in supporting families flourish in all their varied forms.
