The local school pool ran at a small profit, providing swimming lessons to local children until the boiler broke and the pool needed repairing. The cost of a new boiler and repairs were more than the school could afford, and a small group of local people took on the project of re-opening the pool as a facility for the whole community.
We aim to provide the regular swimming lessons for children, but also open swimming sessions, and sensory sessions. We would like to install a hoist to allow access for those with disabilities. We would also like to provide Aquafit and relaxation sessions, during the day, for those who are at home and may be isolated, as well as evening sessions for those who work.
The site is close to the local recreation centre and would be a good location, for those playing tennis, football, cricket, bowls or using the sports hall, to relax in after sports.
The current facilities need complete refurbishment. A new boiler is needed, and proper changing facilities with showers are needed. The building needs insulation and the whole project is currently estimated to cost more than £400,000.
Once completed we would use any running profit to reinvest in the facilities to keep them maintained so that they will not require major refurbishment in the future.
We ran a local consultation, which identified that local people would use the pool, and provided ideas for further sessions that we could offer. During our local fundraising, people from surrounding villages have expressed interest in the pool. We are applying for large grants, but the largest of these (Sport England, etc.) are all frozen at the moment due to coronavirus.
It has taken quite a while to write a business plan (this is available from our website at copsinkorswim) and gain charity status, and now we need progress or the site will become dangerous and the school or City of York council will need to make it safe - incurring a significant cost to them.
We know that this project is viable, will work and will be a benefit to the whole local community, we just need the funding. Thank you for your support.
