Providing the public with extraordinary insights into how inspiring individuals are overcoming the challenges of their mental health

by CITWP in London, England, United Kingdom

New stretch target

  • The extra revenue that we attract will be invested into enhancing the technological capacity of our production. For example, instead of submitting to the traditional norms of having our audience simply 'observing' our play, we would like to use technology to visually engage the audience into certain parts of the narrative. The aim is to create a fourth dimension of the play by having several monitors and cameras, (which we will rent for the duration of the production), hanging from the walls and ceilings of the auditorium. The cameras and monitors will then be used as 'live feeds' to:

a) Project, in real time, the emotions and  feelings of our audience  as they  observe themselves watching some of the challenging scenes in the play (seats will be designated for audience members who will want to be part of this process).

b) To  ‘live feed’ some of the action on the stage in order to multiple  different perspectives of the same scene/moments for the audience

c) To create a  short one-minute edit of the play which will be screened onto the monitors at the  end of the play, as the main character, Fidel, concludes his 'life review’ with the audience.

These technical introductions, of cameras and monitors, will have the effect of bringing our audience, even though they will remain in their seats, directly into the action  being played out on the stage. This will make their experience of our production far more engaging and visceral.

Hello and thank you for taking the time to engage with our exciting campaign, Conundrum!

Crying in the Wilderness Productions (CITWP) is dedicated to producing groundbreaking theatre productions that will enthrall our audiences and enrich the theatrical landscape of the UK. In addition, our company also creates exciting opportunities for Young People to have greater access to the arts as performers, creatives and managers.

Over the past three years we have been researching our new play, Conundrum, which will be premiered at the Young Vic Theatre in May 2020.

Our joyous heartfelt drama gives our audience an extraordinary insight into the tremendous capacity of the human spirit. This remarkable story revolves around our lead character, Fidel, who we will witness grappling with the debilitating effects of his mental illness. As tensions over his condition increases, Fidel embarks upon an epic journey to find the answers to life's most fundamental question - Who am I and why am I here?

Portrayed through drama, dance and music our dynamic brand of theatre has  been hailed  by critics in the past as, 'stunning, compelling, breath-taking, gripping, intelligent, visceral, beautiful and comprehensively original’.

The aim of our production is to promote new discussions around the topic of mental health. For far too long we have been bombarded by the media with negative imagery of Mental illness. Rarely are we exposed to positive examples of ordinary people overcoming their condition. These are the types of inspirational stories that we will be sharing with our audience.

Our original plan was to record the music for our show and run it as a soundtrack. However, in our last workshop in 2017, the music was performed 'live' to the delight of our audience. Therefore, we will use the crowdfunding revenue to enable our musicians to perform the music 'live' throughout the entire run. This will also empower our supporters to validate, to family and friends, the merits and importance of their donations.

It is hoped that our enlightened approach towards portraying mental health will help to reverse the scaremongering that prevents women, men and children from wanting to seek professional help and guidance.

Conundrum will receive its world premiere at the Young Vic Theatre from 9th May - 30th May 2020  www.youngvic.org/whats-on/conundrum
