History of Home Start Cymru
Home Start Cymru has been supporting families in their local communities for 50 years , we want to build upon our group success to offer peer support to parents of all ages.
We currently run young mums peer support groups reducing isolation and loneliness and want to extend access for parents of all ages. The group has proven to be successful, one group has increased mum's confidence and skills to become sustained with the parents supported by a volunteer. Some issues identified; post-natal depression, ace's, mental health and domestic violence.
Home Start project aim
We aim to set up more groups throughout the Borough aiming to build more resilient communities working together and peer support for parents of all ages. The project will offer ongoing training for the parents increasing confidence, isolation and self esteem to sustain local groups in their areas.
During the support we have identified the support dads also need and want to support them as part of a groups. The issues have been attachment, mental health and NEETS, some dads are the primary carer due to reasons such as partner is ill, suffering mental health or mum working. Confidence building for dads at a group setting can help them to talk and share information and advice without feeling judged by others.
Home Start group
An observation from running groups has been anxiety as a barrier with some people so we will offer a home visits beforehand so they are familiar with staff & volunteers, then we offer a quick visit to the group for a coffee ( to encourage small amount of time before building to staying the whole session) . This contact may only be the one some parents having during the week. We will offer time out for the parents if they are upset over personal issues.
We are holding fundraising events engaging and empowering people to support the events in their local communities e.g. summer fete, Christmas activities and selling items that have been donated or made by parents to Home Start. Money raised will help towards the overhead costs of setting up and running the groups whilst trying to regenerate income.
