Our background: Plymouth Sports Academy was set up 2 years ago initially to run holiday clubs for disadvantaged children, it has since grown to run sessions for vulnerable and disadvantage adults as well as disadvantage children and those with learning difficulties. It currently is in contact with over 500 children and adults a week running projects that improve health, self confidence, community cohesion and life skills. These projects are vital and have a huge impact of the participants lives, but there are so many areas that need this support. PSA is not about elite level performance its about providing access to sport for those who need it most. Sport is a powerful tool in changing and improving an individuals or groups life.
The Project: This particular project is aimed at the two most deprived areas within Plymouth and aims to engage both youths and adult is fun fitness sessions. These sessions will aim to increase not only health but self esteem, self confidence, communication and community cohesion. It will aim to build stronger community links and give the group ownership of the session to ensure its sustainable and there is a lasting sports legacy within the areas. The funding will pay for two sports coaches to run 2 session a week in each area, 4 session a week in total and facility charge for 10 weeks.
Why we need the money: The two targeted areas are the two most deprived in the city and among the most deprived in England and therefor its residences often struggle to afford regular sports clubs or attend fitness centres or classes. This project will fund the sports coaches and facility hire to allow them to attend for a greatly reduced session fee. This fee has been agreed in consultation with the residence and deemed affordable.
The future: As a charity PSA has many volunteers who will be able to support the session and help the community form a committee and ensure there is a structure in place to help the session become and stay sustainable.
