Community House GY is a 100% operated and funded Volunteer Community Resource Centre in Great Yarmouth welcoming all with our “Open Door”, “One Stop Shop”, “Cup of Tea and a Chat” approach to community focused support.
Whoever you are and what ever the problem we are here for you......
Hello; my name is Gavin Gardner and I am the founder of the Community House GY project. With a previous history of working in the care sector, I was employed to review and build on services within a multi agency operated Independent Living Centre within Norfolk. Over an 18 month period, with the support of volunteers we were able to increase services and centre visitors by over 400%. Despite this hard work and the impressive results of my volunteer team the centre was closed to the public in 2016.
With a proven need and demand for services, it was decided by myself and my team to continue to support the 4,000 residents that had used the centre before it was closed.
With a little determination and a large amount of stubbornness we were able to respond to community demand with the opening of Community House GY in 2016 to help replace those lost services. With an established volunteer team behind me and with the support of health and social care professionals we were able to continue and expand those services that had been lost. In the first twelve months of operating Community House GY supported over 5,500 centre visitors 100% funded and supported by our volunteer team.
And that was just the start……………
Community House GY’s operational success is down to our very simple approach “giving people the time to discuss their concerns” and then working with them to prioritise and address each issue “one at a time”. You're absolutely right “not exactly Rocket Science” but in many cases it has been all that was needed, simply giving people the time to offload.
Being able to discuss Social Issues with Mental and Physical Health all at the same time has meant that many clients only need to visit once with the reassurance that if circumstances change they can always come back to see us.
Being independent has also made a huge difference to many clients with all initial conversations being held without the need for personal or private information, this allows us to offer a degree of anonymity and provides extra reassurance for those not wishing to notify statutory services or agencies of their personal circumstances.
Our services are constantly developing from within our centre and within the community with a strong support network. Services offered from Community House GY include;
Information & Advisory Services Equipment Demonstration
Personal Equipment Assessments Mobility Aids
Spoken Therapies Shopmobility
Carer Training Private Carer Support
Financial Support Bereavement Support
Mental Health Support Personal Skills Training
One of the unplanned successes of the Community House GY project has been its community reach. Our centre now supports clients from across Norfolk, Suffolk and neighbouring counties, creating a growing community network with over 36 supported projects spreading out across the counties.
What makes this exceptionally special to us is that almost all of these project are now operated by those who once came to us in crisis or needing support. From Wheelchair Sports, to schemes tackling loneliness. All these well being services are only possible due to the resources of Community House GY and as these ripples expand across the counties we are able to see a community change on a huge scale, with huge thanks to all of the volunteers for making this possible.
Coming from a mixed commercial background including engineering, manufacture and design I have a real passion in creating and developing new exciting projects as well being able to think outside the box when presented with new challenges. A professional Outdoor Pursuits Instructor I have always been interested in giving people opportunities that they may not normally have without additional support. Volunteering and working within the emergency services I have been privileged to work in front services including the Ambulance Service as well as a number of Search and Rescue services, with a specialism in Swift Water Rescue and Cliff Rescue in some of the most extreme environments.

We are very proud of the achievements of our team but we are unable to continue to self fund this project for the future, based on the volunteer model and with no wages being drawn the total cost of the project is £35,000.00 per year to operate.
For every client we supported, if we received just £5.00 this centres future would be secure. We want to keep this project growing for many years and we have proven that this is an operational model that can lift a whole community.
Please give what you can from pennies to pounds, it all goes to keep this remarkable project going and who knows what we will be able to achieve with your support.
