In June 2015 after a very successful Carnival day, the locally renowned Tideswell Band uncharacteristically left all their instruments and uniforms in the building whilst they went off to join the festivities in the village. At 3-00am an alarm was raised by a local resident as flames were billowing out of the adjacent building. It took the fire brigade 3 hours to get the fire under control, by which time the building was beyond retrieval, including all the band's musical instruments, uniforms and music, some of historical value, worth over £30,000!!! The local Scout Group lost most of their cooking and camping equipment/furniture plus much activity equipment was lost to smoke damage e.g. craft equipment, audio visual devices and much loved football table!
At the moment neither the Band or the Scout Group have suitable long term premises. This is very inconvenient, and means that the equipment from both groups is stored in friend's houses and barns around the village, not ideal!! Scout meetings and band practises are moved around the village sometimes ending up in friend's houses.
The burnt-out building has been demolished and the site made safe. The lease from Derbyshire County Council has been extended. Plans for a new building have been drawn up and approved by Peak District National Park Planning Board and all we need now is to start the rebuild!
The strong hearted villagers have already raised £20k towards costs already incurred. We now need £100k to complete the project and have a new purpose built, much needed, secure building for the whole community.
