One versed in the alchemy of what if / 210 agents of transformation
As I write this update, I am taking time to reflect on generousity, and the readiness and willingness to give - what it means to offer, present, bring or share; to apply one's time, attention, or resources fully and freely; to place what you have in someone else's care. Reading through the comments and tributes left here on Clare's Memorial Residency fund page, it's clear to see how Clare's own readiness and willingness to give in life has touched so many people.
It feels so fitting, so appropriate and so 'right' that this desire to extend support to others can somehow continue even though Clare is no longer with us - that she has also given her friends, family, loved ones, collaborators, peers, supporters and well-wishers a way to transform some of those feelings of loss and sadness into the alchemy of 'what if' through establishing this memorial residency opportunity.
As we prepare for Clare's funeral this week I'm also thinking a lot about transformation - the physical transition from one state to another; the constant actions and processes of change; and different modes of becoming an agent of transformation.
The title of this update (and these idea of the alchemy of what if and becoming an agent of transformation) is borrowed from a text by writer-artist Emma Cocker in Clare’s 2017 publication Materials of Resistance.
In the last two weeks, 210 people have become supporters of Clare's plans to provide a mid career artist, such as herself, with the time, space, funds and critical engagement to develop and resolve new artwork. This overwhelming support has meant that in this short time, we have passed more than four times the initial target set for the campaign, which is truly amazing.
I want to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for your generousity - for your readiness and willingness to give, share, reciprocate and participate; for trusting in the 'what if' of realising Clare's project; and for becoming agents of transformation.
Clare's crowdfunder will remain open until the 28th of May to allow those you are yet to hear about the campaign to contribute if they wish. After this point (during June), I'll be sending out the project rewards to those who have selected to receive them. If you know of others who would like to get involved with the project, please do share information about how to join in with them.
With best wishes & love,
Rachel Dobbs - on behalf of The Clare Thornton Memorial Residency fund.
