City Arts' vision is to bring together the Newbury community, by converting an old Wesleyan chapel into a Community Art Hub. Regardless of age or background, we believe everyone can benefit from creative inspiration in their lives.
There is growing awareness of the positive impact of art & creativity on mental health and general wellbeing and we want to use the visual arts to draw people to engage with our project, which will reach beyond art and into community projects such as recycling, allotmenting, general socialising and sharing common interests. We want to welcome members of society often isolated by virtue of age, disability, poor educational or skills attainment and make them feel safe welcome and valued.
We have already been running a busy programme of art workshops and community art based events for 3 years now and are gaining a great reputation for originality and inclusion. But our facilities are so basic, we struggle to cater for those who need a warm, fully accessible space.
WHAT WOULD YOUR MONEY DO?
City Arts’ building could be a fantastic amenity for the local community. Situated in Newbury’s old City area, it is close to the town centre, transport hubs and to numerous Alms houses, primary & secondary schools & has a large local elderly population. We have a big fundraising target to completely refurbish our building, but THIS APPLICATION is to set the ball rolling with the most basic of needs - toilets that are accessible to all.
