Where does the name Circus come from?

Thank you to one of our backers for asking, we thought we should share our thoughts about this with you...

The word circus derives from Latin meaning "circle" or "ring". We wanted a name that linked to our location; our collective currently meet in the new Inverness Creative Academy on Crown Circus.

Circus has lots of connotations that we liked - it evokes a spirit of energy, enjoyment and curiosity and reflects the diverse artistic practices of the collectives' members from sculpture & printmaking to performance and participatory work.

We also love the Inverness coat of arms featuring a camel and elephant with it’s origins linked to strong foreign trade. These surprising animals link into our imagining of Inverness’ future as a circus of vibrant and unexpected possibilities!
