AN INTRODUCTION TO EYB
Award-winning EYB is about to embark on its phenomenal 20th anniversary year. The nationally acclaimed company was founded in 1998 by Janet Lewis MBE. EYB offers unique opportunities to selected, regional young dancers to perform in professional classical ballets in beautiful venues close to where they live. Sell-out audiences are treated to sumptuous, full-length productions starring international principal dancers and showcasing some of the most talented young dancers from the region. Miss Lewis' concept for the company is to nurture young British dancers by offering them professional performance experience to complement their regular training. There are now ex-EYB dancers in some of the world's top companies including the Royal Ballet Company, English National Ballet and Sir Matthew Bourne's New Adventures.
WHAT WILL THE NEW PRODUCTION BE LIKE?
Cinderella in Hollwood will be EYB's newest full-length classical ballet and will be a welome addition to it's extensive repertoire. The classic fairy tale will be injected with some '50s cinematic glamour. Cinderella is a seamstress in a Hollywood film studio. Her mother (or fairy godmother) is a former movie star of the '30s and her wicked step-sisters are Hollywood starlets. Cinderella is granted the opportunity to attend a royal film premiere - where she falls in love with the handsome prince. When midnight strikes, she flees leaving a sparkly silver pointe shoe as the only clue to her identity..... The production will feature a stunning selection of Shostakovic's Jazz Suites and music from the 50's films - such as Tea for Two and Dancing in the Dark.
WHY IS THE MONEY NEEDED TO BE RAISED?
Production costs for Cinderella in Hollywood will be £45,000 and EYB need to raise £32,000 through crowdfunding in order to make the exciting production a reality. Production costs will include commissioning the set designer, set builders and painters to build a state-of-the-art Hollywood set. The costume designer will create period designs and more than 10 highly skilled costume makers will craft over 260 elegant costumes. Many of the stunning principals' costumes - with their fabrics, jewels and beading will cost in excess of £1,000 each.
English Youth Ballet currently has 6 critically acclaimed productions in its repertoire. Creating new ballets is essential for the company to provide its young dancers with new challenges and theatre audiences with innovative new work. English Youth Ballet operates via revenue obtained solely from rehearsal fees and box office sales and receives no government or private funding.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF THE CROWDFUNDING TARGET IS NOT REACHED?
We are confident that our crowdfunding appeal is going to be successful but if our target is not reached we will explore alternative sponsorship e.g. approaching corporate sponsors.
